I got a H&R Ultra Varmint 223 rem. When I shoot factory ammo(Winchester 45 grains from Walmart with a COL of 2.210") the groups at 100 yards are good but at 200 yards the groups are very poor.I measured the cartridge length using a bullet Vmax 50 grains, and the bullet touches the rifling at 2.400". If I load for a COL at 2.390" or 2.385", I'm still above the recommended COL from the reloading manuals (from 2.200" to 2.280"), and the bullet is not seated very deep inside the case, still, I can't remove it by hand.
I sat a bullet in an empty case at COL 2.390" and the action closed no problem, and the bullet did not move.
What do you recommend I should use for COL?
Thank you

Welcome to the forum!

I use 2.260" OAL in my Handi rifle, but that's with the 60 gr V-Max. The Handis have such a long throat it's hard to load them as long as the throat will take. It doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference, they shoot good at the length I have them. BTW, I'm using 27.2 gr of Varget and a CCI 400 with the 60 gr V-Max.

guillaumeaudren,

What Paul wrote! Except I use a C.O.L. of 2.270" in my 223 Rem Ultra Varmint Handi.

And, welcome to the forum!

Mike
