I'm looking for something I can use in .38 Special, 357 Magnum, and 40 S&W for mid-range to medium magnum loads. Longshot seems to give good velocities with lower pressure. HS-6 gives similar velocities to Longshot, according to Hodgdon. It takes less Longshot by weight for similar velocities therefore you get more loads (sorry, I'm part Scottish) per pound of powder over HS-6.

Anyone care to relate their experience with these powders in these rounds?

All the Best,

I've only used HS-6 and thta was for 9mm and .44mag it's a good all around powder. I know use Power Pistol but wouldn't mind trying Longshot one day...

I use a lot of HS-6 and Longshot for 9mm rounds and .38 Special +P rounds. I've found both to be clean though HS-6 is slightly cleaner at full power loads. Overall, I've found HS-6 to work very well with both jacketed and lead bullets while Longshot seems to work best with jacketed bullets only. I use both but prefer HS-6 with lead bullets. 125gr JHP bullets in a .38 Special +P are very accurate with Longshot. Loading a 158gr LSWC bullet in a .38 Special +P is extremely accurate when loaded with HS-6. It's a low pressure and low flash powder too.

If you are going to load lead bullets and want only 1 powder make it HS-6. If you are going to load mainly jacketed bullets either will serve you well. Try them both and see which your guns like better. I lean on the side of HS-6 because the more I use it the better I like it.
