I just purchased a Uberti 1873 model sporting rifle in lever action. This is the first 45 colt that I have owned, got just about every other caliber in hand guns.
I have not shot it yet, but wondered if any of you have any info on this gun? and load recommendations. Thanks enjoy the forum.

rcorley11,

I've admired those rifles from afar for quite some time. But I've never had the funds to buy one.

The one thing I do know, is that they are not strong enough for use with the +P type loads. Stick with the standard 14,000 PSI type loads and you'll be fine.
The toggle link action are the week areas in this action.

These guns have a good rep over on leverguns.com, though as Joe mentions, the M73 actions aren't the strongest actions around.

I've had very good luck with Winchester's pipsqueak recommendation of 7.1 gr. of 231. (Guess which primer they use! ) If the gun shoots that load well and you don't want to hunt elk or griz with it, you should be pleased.

Let us know your results.

Pipsqueak?!?!?!?!?!?!? Rod, how dare you insult one of the best standard pressure .45 Colt loads out there.

Actually that is an excellent load, but is after all only a factory duplication sub SAAMI level load.
I shoot lots of 'em. Still beat the cas squib loads though.

rcorley11,
Here's a load you might try. It's straight out of the Accurate Arms data. 17.8grs of AA5744 under a 255gr SWC. Velocity is supposed to be 860fps from a 7" test barrel. What it is from a real gun I have no idea.
Considering how much it costs ($19.00 per pound here) it's not really cost effective for someone who shoots a lot.
However it is proving to be a very accurate standard pressure load in my guns. If your 73 is finnicky about feeding SWCs, substitute a 250gr RNFP.

Joe, my 25-5 loves that 255 gr./7.1 gr. of 231 load. Feels like a .22 LR out of that 6" N frame.

Thanks fellas I can't wait to get it to the range, did not know much about the gun except it really caught my eye with that half octogon and half round barrel. It's a real beauty. I want some good loads and not squibs but I will be cautious about the pressure. I really enjoy the forum and pick up some good info on some of my other guns. I also enjoy reloading, I have about sixteen different pistols and about 10 rifles to load for. Appreicate the info have a good day at the range.
