I just bot a new Green mountain 1-66 twist barrel (drop in replacement for my Hawken) in the 1-66 twist. I have always hunted whitetail with roundball and patch with good success, so I went with the barrel specific to round ball.

Ok, maybe a dumb question, but what would the performace of a sabot be from this barrel? Say with a 180 grain .44 bullet or a 300 grain .44 bullet?

I know they are more suited to the faster twist barrels, and I do intend to try this, but does anyone have an experience with this?

Much thanks.

Dave.

I have a 1/48 and a 1/28 barrel, both shoot most any slug or sabot, the posters I have seen with the 1/60 and slower could use the lightest Lee REAL and the Lyman Maxi-balls, if they did use a moderate load, about 75% of maximum.
Sabots did not do well.

I used to have a CVA Mountain Rifle 1:66 twist.... Results were not good, looked like a shotgun group at 50 yards. Changed back to round ball and the results were as differant as night and day.. the round ball grouped like it was suppose to.

If you try them look for a short one. maybe even a light power belt or short conical. Something with a smaller bearing suface should work better than a long suface.

Another option, just for the sake of testing, would be to try the Buffalo Bullets "Ballet". It is an inbetween type of projectile that looks like a stretched round ball. I have had several folks tell me they shoot real well.

Just a fwiw type of thing.
