Were you ever in Boy Scouts or similar organization?
Yes, in Scouts, Yes, in another organization, No

My prediction is a VERY large percentage will have been in Scouts with nearly 100% in Scouts or something similar.

I was in scouts growing up, and I enjoyed it for the most part.

I was in the Boy Scouts for a short period of time as a teen. I enjoyed what I was exposed to, but that was a pretty good while ago! Things may have changed over the years.

I was in cub scouts then boy scouts for a short time. I had to quit because Mom and Dad divorced and we couldn't afford to send me any more. But the time I was in I enjoyed. When I hear about how it is now, it seems to be quite different than when I was in. But it could just be me.

I was a cub scout once a long time ago. I got a handbook and a pocket knife during that interaction. Later I was a boy scout for maybe a year Got another handbook, another knife, and learned how to tie an assortment of knots and "whip" the end of a rope. Both experiences were positive for me. However, neither of these fine organizationa seem to have ever recovered from these experiences.

Scouts....shot BB guns in scouts....shot bow's 'n arrows in scouts.
Now that I'm all growed up...I shoot big guns, and BB guns, and bow's 'n arrows.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Dave.

Never was a formal member of the scouts when I was young but I was home-schooled for the first 8 grades and my fokes bought every book they ever found at school sales, library sales, garage sales, etc. About fourth gradish the family library took up floor to ceiling shelves all the way around three walls of the school-room in our house ( about 20' x 20' room ) and continued to grow from there. There were about a dozen scout hand-books in that collection -- cub scout, wolf scout, etc. plus a lot of outdoor hunting and survival manuals. I read them all cover to cover multiple times, and put a lot of the stuff into practice on camp-outs with my friends and family.

Eagle Scout here. Had lot of fun in Scouts. Got my boys into Scouts a few years ago. It`s not like it used to be. To many rules, Kids aren`t allowed to do this or that. Kind of takes the fun out of it. Me and my boys have more fun by going shooting, hunting, camping and other outdoor stuff on our own

Cub Scout, Weblows, Boy scouts. Found my local club to be biased toward kids who's families had money or status. The organization turned me off! the leaders catered toward the "rich" kids and ignored the less fortunate kids, "Not only me".
I find this still happening with the Girl Scouts and Boy scouts in the area.
Also the kids sell their hearts out in their annual cookie and candy sales and they get $3.50 per box and the troop only gets $.40 per box. I find it rather disconcerting.

I didn't participate offically for a similar reason. The leaders of the local troop were hand in glove with the local sports programs at the Government Schools and they deliberatly and knowingly discriminated against home-schoolers.

Eagle Scout, 1966. Best thing I ever did. My friends think I took the 'Be Prepared' part too seriously, but I know who'll be knocking at the door if things ever go bad.

Maybe that makes me more (or less?) understandable.... I've run "the gauntlet 7 times". Old salts say that makes me a "fool". Young 'uns think I'm a "Maniac"..
Seeing as how you're in CA, I'm pleased you investigated - particularly if you're interested in the history of the Gold Rush era..

I just did a quick search and didn't see anything about "the gauntlet" but I did read about the organization's interest in California History. I'm not a history buff per se, but find certain things interesting enough to research a little bit.
I love the "off the wall" attitude this outfit seems to hold near and dear. Maybe I'll look into it a little more when I have more time.

It does make you a bit more "defined" if you will. "Understandable" I'll leave to wiser heads than mine
