Here's the poll question from the front page: How often do your clean your firearms?

Once a week wether they need it or not
Every time they get shot
Every two or three outings
Only when they start to malfunction
Other?

I used to clean mine every time I went shooting, but in the last couple years that's fallen off to every couple times I go out they get a good cleaning. I wipe the fouling off the outside every time though, especially when shooting cast bullets. I don't think it hurts them not to do it, but that stuff is sure easier to get off right away than after it has time to set.

i am in the same category. i shoot a handful of guns at each outting so none get used a great deal over 2 or 3 trips to the range. i wipe them off till they need to be cleaned.

Every time after I shoot them. If I have to put a dirty gun into my safe I can't sleep at night!

Generally, every time I shoot them. But not always. Sometimes I dilly dally around and don't get to them till later. And sometimes that later is after several range trips.

I shoot an average of 3 rifles each time on the range.

I do not clean at the range, but I can sleep without cleaning them...LOL

The first oppertune moment I will clean the bbl/action, and wipe down.

I also do not shoot any precision rifle more than 25 rounds without a cleaning.

Using Iosso bore paste until the patch is light gray.

roughly 4 patches, and one dry.

Every time they get shot I clean em. I'm not a fanatic about it but I worry about pitting of the bores. Rarely do I let it go more than a day or two.

Lately I've wondered though. I have a S&W in particular that takes 12 shots before it shoots right. Seems like those first 12 hit 5" low. So maybe there is something to not cleaning.

Depends on the gun really. Some get cleaned WHILE shooting.... yet
some never get cleaned. All get wiped down afterwards.

The only ones that almost never would get cleaned would seem to me to be a .22 rimfire.

All centerfire need cleaning.

Target rifles...after 20 to 25 rounds..first 3 rounds are fouling shots...and 20 shots for score.

Military rifles...generally after 40 to 60 rounds.

Kalashnikovs type need the gas piston cleaned out after about 100 rounds...as does the M-1

As an avid muzzle loader shooter, I got in the habit of cleaning all my guns the second I got back home. When I bought my first house and started working on it, and got a new job with more hours, I kinda started getting lazy. I still clean the muzzle loaders right away, but due to limited toy time, I clean the others every other trip usually. Sad to say, I have almost quit shooting BP all together because of being too lazy to clean them and wanting to spend my precios free time shooting, not cleaning. The boss said they were cutting our hours back so maybe I'll get to shoot more like I used to

I clean them every time I go--however it takes me a while to get to them like about 4 to seven days. But I am compulsive about wiping them down and letting them "soak" in break free. I found that if you let them sit and soak-the crud comes off easier. With the Kalisnakov's and other piston operated rifles I usually pull the piston and coat it with shooter's choice before wiping it down.

I consider that my guns are an investment and if cared for properly will retain or gain value.

Some of them don't get cleaned as often as they should, as they spend most of their lives in the pickup, collecting dirt. Some get cleaned quite a bit. No set schedule really, mostly just when they need it.

I agree with cas, depends on the gun and conditions. Revolvers maybe once per 100 rounds, Auto pistol maybe 200 rounds, Centerfire rifle once every trip with more than a box shot. Kind of depends on what I see in the bore

Muzzleloader barrel cleaned every couple of shots then thorough cleaning when I get home.

If I hunt in the rain full cleaning even if not fired.

I wipe them all down after handling with oiled rag or paper towel.

Ranch13 has the right idea too "when they need it". You shoot a particular gun enough you know when it needs cleaning.

Is this deja vu, all over again?

It seems like we had this discussion not too long ago. But, I guess it doesn't hurt to do it again.

My cleaning habits seem to be changing. Probably from shooting almost every day!

That .357 Handi rifle doesn't have time to get rust in the bore before I'm shooting it again! I've been through a box of 180 gr SSP's, a box of 220gr's, most of a box of 158 gr XTP's and etc. I've only had the barrel a month and a half and all of those bullets through a single shot! However, I'm getting a little obsessive/compulsive with using the bore brush. I don't want that last load to influence the next load, even though it seems to shoot better with a little powder dirt in it!

I clean mine after every shoot.

I won't put a dirty gun away.

For the ones that don't get shot often I drag them out of the safe about every 30 days and wipe them down and lightly oil them with a swatch run through the barrel and chamber.

I subscribe to the thought, "A clean gun is a happy gun."

Put me in the every time I shoot it group. A lot of guys don't like cleaning guns, me, I enjoy it. Just messin' with the guns is half the fun. One thing I can't abide is letting a gun go south due to lack of cleaning. I've seen too many at dealers with rust damage, or pitted barrels.

I fall into the "depends what I'm shooting" crowd. Muzzle loaders and Military surplus guns shooting anything corrosive get cleaned as soon as I get home. Everything gets wiped down with an oily rag before going back into the safe. I usually take three or four guns to the range at at time. At most, one or two will get throughly cleaned each time.

Lots of times I just wipe and oil before storing, but I ALWAYS make sure chambers and extractors are clean to ensure function.

Some guns get cleaned every 1500-2000 rounds, some guns get cleaned every 25 rounds. It depends on what they are and what I expect from them. When I say cleaned I mean cleaned, not just wiped off and cleaned up a little.
