I can't speak for here but I belong to another forum that has shut down it's chat room. It seems that the chat function sucks up band width and forums are starting to shut them down and refer people to sites that are specfic to chatting.

I'm not much for real time chats, but when I do feel like "talking" real time, I've had great results talking to people I already know using a program called Skype.
It not only has a chat function but will tell you when your "buddies" are online. It also allows you to use your web cam to talk with video.
If typing is what you like it has chat and group chat in the public with strangers or with just your friends.
It also enables you to use voice like on the phone.
The wife and I use it to talk and text each other at work and we keep in touch with our son too.
It may not be a fit for you, but it's something to look into.
