(Cross posted from the General Topic)
I'm building a flintlock rifle modeled after the Lancaster style.

It's going to be a 50cal with curly maple. I bought all the parts individually with help from Ryan (owner) at

http://www.muzzleloaderbuilderssupply.com/index.html

Because this site is for "Handloading" I didn't think it appropriate to fill up space here about my project but since I've gotten to know many of you here, I thought you might be interested. I'm documenting the build on a Blog page if anyone is interested in following along.

Very cool Rig!

Some years back I used to hunt with a .50 percussion rifle built by Thompson-Center. Often thought about building my own too - and even making it a flintlock. Looks to me like you've got some quality components on hand, I think that stock is going to finish up beautifully.

I'll check back in to see your progress every now and again. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Best Regards, Guy

I've hunted quite a bit with a percussion .50 and killed many deer with it. They can be very effective firearms. I've been thinking about a flintlock lately, as a "just in case" rifle with the way percission caps got hard to find. I'd like one in a very small caliber, .32 or .36 for small game though.

Good luck, I'll be following your blog.

Rig,

This store is about 15 miles from my house. I have considered doing the same as you and building a rifle.

I'm having a great time with it so far! Nice and relaxing. I'm taking my time and reading a lot and learning some new skills along the way.

I can't get out and do thing physical and I hate watching sports or "reality" TV shows, so I find myself in my shop and this is a great get away project.

I think the Lancasters are a beautiful rifle I really like there lines. I never build one but I would like one in a light 13/16" barrel .36 caliber That would make the choice of using #1 swaged buck shot.
I build mostly the Hawken Rifles, but the Lancaster is a good choice.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Kurt, I have a store bought Hawken, caplock and really enjoy it.

I like the .50 cal. Don't now way, maybe it's easier to handle the ammo? I dunno, never cared for the 30 cal round ball rifles. Even my C&B revolver is .44cal. I just seem to go for the bigger bores for some reason. Maybe I'm "compensating" for a shortcoming somewhere?... LOL.

I'll keep the Blog updated with the latest on the project.

Love the pics of your rifle. Wait till you get to the butt plate, that is a lot of fun. You are trying to fit something in 2 dimensions at the same time.

The only Hawken I have left is a .58 and that is one I dont think the original were never made in but it is a very good shooter and it sure puts the game down in a hurry.
The 50 is good.
