Would anyone have any suggestions for reduced loads---like gallery loads w/ cast bullets for either 300WSM or 7mm WSM. I have molds for 170gr .30? and I believe 140gr .28?. Would like to work on a load that could be used for plinking, target and practice. W/o the blast , expence and recoil of std loads. I know its asking a lot w/ the case capacity. But any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks up front.

Rogn, on this one, I know nothing, but have an opinion anyway. Long ago, Ed Harris taught us that 13 grains of Red Dot would work with normal weight bullets in an amazing variety of cartridges. Since then, Trail Boss has been introduced. It's much the same burning rate as RD, but takes up more room.
That's where I'd start. Dunno how well it would shoot, but I'd have a high degree of confidence that 13 grains of Trail Boss will get the bullets you mentioned down the barrel without hurting anything.
Some folks would suggest fillers in this situation. Other folks would scream, "Fillers will ruin your gun!" I confess that I sometimes use fillers, but I only do it with $100 milsurp and Handis with their cheaply replaceable barrels. I would not use a filler in your case.

Rogn,
I'm pretty big on using Blue Dot for situations like this. In 7mm Mag, I use 27.0 gr with a 140 gr bullet that is sufficient for deer out to 200 yards and shoots some very nice groups at 100 yards.
The method I use for determining a start load is to completely fill a case with Blue Dot and strike it off level. Weight what is in the case and multiply by .4 (40%). With the WSMs being something I haven't dealt with using Blue Dot, I'd probably start a grain or two lower than the 40% number.
From there, it's just a matter of playing with it until you get the best group size, but don't get above 50% on your loads.

The 13 grains or Red Dot thing works well in cases like the .303 British and 7.62 x 54, but it always seemed a little hotter than it needed to be and a charge of 11 grains worked a little better. That being the case, leftoverdj's advice to try that load seems good. How much more capacity does one of those short magnum cases have than a 7.62 x 54, maybe 15%? A charge of 13 grains of Red Dot sounds like a good place to start.
