Did a local trade and aquired a new in box Remington Model 700 BDL 375 H&H Magnum this past weekend.
Has a gorgeous wood stock, matte finish blue barrel and safari style open sights.

Took it out today with a box of factory loads (270 Grain soft points) and I think I now have a dislocated shoulder, two loose teeth and a mild concusion!!!!

But seriously....this baby is a beast! It weighs in at only 7.7 pounds without a scope.

I have ordered up some dies and have some new brass and 300 grain bullets ready to load. Now to find a load for range use that won't kick my A**

Get a Limbsaver!
And maybe a muzzle break......
That's what tamed my .416 WBY down....

The recoil will be manageable in a hunting situation, so not really interested in adding weight to the gun.
It has a Decellerator pad on it.

I will put together some "range" loads and this will be a fun gun to shoot paper with!!

Noted gunwriter John Barsness did a lot of load work with the .375 H&H and recommended a very accurate load which isn't much of a kicker:

260 gr Nosler Accubond, 69 gr Reloader 15

This produced a mild 2620 fps from my Ruger Number One, and sub MOA three-shot groups. I used it in September to cleanly take a nice size black bear at a tad over three hundred yards. Very nice load.

With the 300 grain bullet, he recommended H4350. I've used that powder as well, and it too produces excellent accuracy. Out at 300 yards, I can't tell any difference in accuracy between the 300 gr Sierra and the 300 gr Hornady.

It is a lot of fun to work with, and more or less practical too. Mine is unlikely to see Africa again, but will be my elk, bear & "big stuff" rifle here in the Pacific Northwest. Remarkable cartridge and amazingly easy to shoot.

Regards, Guy

Guy,

Thanks for the load data, I will give that a try.

Curious....what does a number one weigh without the scope. My Rem 700 is 7.7 pounds without a scope.

I also just ordered up some cast bullets with gas checks from Gene Salo in Renton. He is sending me some 270 grain round nose to try out. Should make good paper punching rounds! Now to scrounge through my powder locker for some rifle powders to use up!

Tom

Ruger lists the "Tropical" at something like 9.25 pounds, but mine is more like 8 or a tad more.

You will likely really enjoy the .375, it's amazingly easy to load, very tolerant and capable of serious accuracy.

I shot the heck out of it this year, getting used to it, with loads from 235 gr Speers to various 300 grainers. Settled on the 260 Nosler Accubond for hunting this year, and it punched right through that bear out at 300 yards. Did a lot of my shooting with it out at my gun club, at the 300 yard gong. Fun stuff!

Here's some related photos:

Different 300 gr Nosler Partitions, old & new:

Some 235 gr Speers loaded up & ready to go. Surprisingly good bullet in my tests and a friend who used them on elk & mule deer for years described results on game as a "train wreck." I kind of liked that.

On the snowy 300 yard line:

235 gr Speer recovered from water-filled milk jugs, 2700 fps.

Various bullets:

260 gr Accubond recovered from the milk jugs:

And the September bear:

I've grown very fond of both the rifle and the cartridge. Hope you enjoy yours as well!

Guy,
I saw the thread you had started on the 375 H&H....nice stuff!
What club are you a member of? I am at the Kenmore Club over in Kenmore, WA. We have a 300 yard range and I will be working this beast on that soon!

What weight is that gas checked cast bullet that you show?

What scope are you using?? I will need to put one on this soon and need something that will take the recoil of the hotter loads on occasion.

I shoot at the North Central Washington gun club, Wenatchee.

I need to dig those cast bullets out again, didn't get around to trying them yet. Believe they're about 220 grains.

I'm using a nice old 2-7x Redfield from STCM(SW). It's been around a few years, but still works great.

Guy, did you hit any bone on that bear with the Nosler Accubond?
The one kid that shot a deer with me this year with his Win 338 hit high on the back with a 225 gr Accubond I loaded for him.
Did not recover the bullet & seems it ricocheted down into the front leg.

I ordered up a Leupold 1.5-5 scope today from Kesselring's for the 375.....should work out well for this big magnum.

Also have some 270 grain gas checked cast bullets on the way from a local bullet maker. Should make good general purpose loads for the range at lower velocity.

Should have it all together later next week and will report back.
