I love the book so much that when I was a kid the librarian finally forbid me to check it out. I'd had it for over 10 MONTHS! So, I wrote Mr Keith and bought my own autographed copy. I still have it and still re-read it about once every 18 months or so. I've been reading this book (again, and again, and again) for over 35 years.

Couldn't tell you which one I read and I read it only once.
However, there is something that has been bothering me for awhile. Whatever book I read Elmer made the comment that he liked the .44 spl and that it could do anything and more then the .45 Colt. Yet I hear others say Elmer was a big fan of the .45 Colt. Did I misread this?

Yes Elmer liked the colt, its just when he was searching for a gun that would take heavy loads, the .44 special being slightly smaller in diameter could be loaded to higher pressures in the guns of that day. I think had guns like the Ruger blackhawk been around in the 1920's that things could have been alot different for the .45 colt. Jim.

I've read my hard back copy of Sixguns by Keith so many times the cover has fallen apart and come off the book. I keep it in a big zip lock so I don't loose any pages.
I gotta find a book binder and get it repaired. Then buy another copy to keep reading.
I guess you could say I've lost count of how many times I've read it.

Jim, thanks for clearing that up. I remember reading it and yet hear so many people mention that Elmer liked the Colt. Wasn't sure if I'd read something wrong.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have yet to read it once. Every time I'm in a book store, I look for it, then I ask about it, and I always get the same arrogant looks of distain from the little liberal weenie behind the counter.....
One of these days I'll just have to order it off the internet.....

Tony,
I love it when some liberal sheep lined weenie starts giving me the "looks". I just get the hackles up and give 'em right back. Their there to sell books, and he has no say in it.
Strange as it may seem, even in gun hating IL I've yet to run across this from regular people.
I ask for, or buy a gun related book and they ack like oh hum, same-o same-o.
Guess I'll have to go to some bigger cess pool of liberalism.
Joe

Tony,
Try Ebay.
I don't own a copy but I have read my dads completly twice and have read bits and pieces many times. My dad always checks my bags to make sure I am not sneaking off with his copy when I visit.

Gun Notes by Keith (Vol I and II) are interesting reading too. They're collections of his articles and letters written to various people. I've only read Vol I, if you like Keiths writing it's worth getting too.

OK John, you made me feel so bad for not reading it, I got a copy from the library today.
I noticed on pages 27-28, "The S. & W. 45 would work in the .45 Colt, but the .45 long Colt cartridges were too long for the S. & W. cylinder. The government loaded short .45's that would interchange in both guns until the .45 was replaced by the Colt .38 in 1892."
Of course, Joe knows I don't have anything bigger than .358", so what a .45 is called doesn't matter to me!

Keith called it that a few times in the book, sometimes 45 Colt, sometimes 45 Long Colt, he wasn't real consistant in what he called a lot of things. He sure thought highly of the Smiths though, didn't he.
Considering that revolvers and cast bullets have been peoples favorites in the past I'm a little surprised that less than 50% have read Sixguns. I'm surprised you could get it at the library, you obviously live in a very enlightened town. Next you'll be getting Gun Notes Paul.

John,
Actually, the librarian is a Republican I met at a meeting and I just mentioned it to her. I remembered to check today and it had been there on inter-library loan since the 20th. I only have it until the Postal Match deadline, but can probably check it out one more time before it goes back.
The librarian is making an order for new books and I think she is going to order "Unfit for Command" by John O'Neil from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
It's amazing what can be done when someone besides a Democrat works in the library!

Guess I'll try the library today to see if they have it. I'd really like to read the whole book instead of just pieces.

Nope, nothing at the library other then a book about shotguns by Elmer.
I can understand Elmer liking the Smiths, I know that was all I had in revolvers for a long time. I liked the Smiths so much that it wasn't till last year that I finally bought another brand, Colt. The Colts are nice but I don't think they are any better.
Someday I may even own a Ruger, just not sure which one I'd want.

joed,
The library will get the book for you if you ask them to. It's a simple matter of getting them to locate it through the inter-library loan system, or if need be, from the Library of Congress.

joed,
It's supposed to be their job to find what you want. They've done it a gillion times and know what to do. Try not to call them simpletons or anything and they will order you a copy. Be nice, you know you're in yankee land now and you may have to prod them in a very gentle way. It's a good application for Cooley's "Looking Glass Self", be nice and they'll reciprocate.
