Squirrel season opens. The 780 is ready.

I'm buying the squirrels helmets and body armour!

Seriously though, be safe out in the woods.

Good luck to you. Weather is getting much cooler at night here and in the evenings. I might be tempted to go out squirrel hunting myself some evening if the situation at home works out just right. Been babysitting grandkids a bit lately.

Our muzzle loader deer season opened today, but I won't get out til Sunday. If it goes well (I get a good buck), I'll be spending time this Fall I would have spent with the crossbow with a small rifle in pursuit of fox squirrels. It's getting cooler fast and I want to go.

Bow season opens in Missouri on the 15th, but it is way too warm for me to enjoy hunting. I hate the flying bugs as much as I hate the chiggers and ticks. I will be using a crossbow this year and my first climbing tree stand.

I have waded through the chiggers and ticks for squirrels most of my life. If I cover myself head to toe with sulfer, I might get after the squirrels early again this year, but I doubt the deer will appreciate how that would smell, so I will wait till later for them.

ham, I use permethrin spray and have not had a tick or chigger since, years.   I buy concentrate and mix my own. I think its used as fly spray on cattle I bought on line at amazon.   its for treating your clothing, will last 6 washings or 6 weeks minimum.   not for skin treatment. works for me and the cows.   hahahah   ron

For hunting from a stand or blind, these Thermacell things work great and I can't smell them up close, so I doubt the deer can. Usually, by the time the muzzle loader season comes in mid September, the ticks are down, but this year we seem to have a second hatching or something, lots of them now. I wear knee high rubber boots in early season and it seems to take care of the chiggers.

Out yesterday with the Marlin 780 shooting Eley Target.
In the woods around 3PM. Sat on deer stand rock leaning
back on the log, slept for an hour. Flying insects
"bugged" me. Walked out to the other end of the point to
limber my legs. Came back to my seat in a large stand of
oaks. Saw nothing though last year plenty of squirrels
were here. About 6PM the sun was behind the hill so began
easing out toward the truck. Look to my right & saw
movement. I put the crosshairs of the 4X Weaver on the
squirrel & pulled the trigger. First shot the sight
picture was lacking so a second shot was need. Anyway one
squirrel in the freezer.

I'll not go back till the days cool some. Bet it was
close to 80. Hate hot.

Yesterday

10 months ago & much happier

It's supposed to cool off this week although I don't think you will be needing that neck gaiter anytime soon!

Looks like Saturday I'll try it again with a couple friends. Shot three 5 shot groups at 50 yards today. The little Marlin
isn't a target gun by any stretch. The light weight & 4X Weaver Marksman scope doesn't help either but it will keep Eley
Target under 3/4 inch at 50 yards which is plenty for hunting tree rats.

In my experience, 50 yards would be a very long shot at a squirrel indeed. I think you're ready to go.

I told myself I wasn't going to mess with them until after I did some serious deer hunting this year. Had as squirrel run across the road in front of me when I was pulling into the drive way and started to reconsider.

Consider that a sign.
