Picked up the Hatfield single shot 12 gauge from Walmart for $99, have to say, it was a good purchase and I'm really happy.
The good: Wood is nice, vent rib is nice, folds in half, fixed modified choke, fits a 5'6 person very well, and everything is tight.
The bad: It has both a safety and a hammer, I tend to carry it cocked and locked..but that's just odd and probably unneeded, trigger pull is horrid, super heavy..I mean like..you don't know what heavy is till you try this. Plastic butt plate. It works..but it's not my favorite thing.

Are these the Turkish made ones like the other big sporting goods stores are selling? They seem good. Now that H&R 1871 or NEF or whatever they called themselves have stopped making the good old Topper design we all started with as kids, I'm guessing the inexpensive single-shot shotgun market is wide open.
I have gotten on a single shot shotgun kick lately. Honestly, with my wing shooting ability, a repeater is just extra weight to carry anyway, and nothing comes up and points better than a single shot. On some reflection, a single shot break open is the most versatile and useful gun a guy can own, legal pretty much everywhere and will be the last thing the gun grabbers come after.
Interesting article by our very own Ed Harris on the matter here;

I looked at one of these in Wal Mart a few days ago, first time they've had one. Crudely finished, but appears strong and robust. I'm not a fan of safeties on guns with exposed hammers, but could probably live with it. Since they discontinued the H&Rs, I suppose the market for these will be pretty strong, I hope they sell a lot of them.
