I would like to do some revolver shooting in IDPA but I only have a 686-6
plus 7 shot. Rules require that you only use 6 shots. Has anybody ever used
a 7 shot revolver and just download to 6. How much of a disadvantage
would this really be?

I had one of those a few years ago but sold it. The 7th shot was
pretty neat in a revolver.

Now, would it be a disadvantage?   Try it and see but I doubt it will
be a big disadvantage.

In the run and gun games reloads are at a premium so there is not time to index the empty chamber under the firing pin. He would have to take the time penalty of a click and no bang when the empty chamber comes around.

I've only shot my 6-shooter in IDPA, but basically: what Terry
said. You'll have time to index the empty chamber where you want
it when you load to start each stage. If you're sharp, you can
count up to 6 and know when to reload (I'm not always that
sharp).

Then, IF you think you can index your 6-shot reload using less
extra time than it takes to pull the trigger an extra time, you can
try that, but Terry's probably right that it's not worth the time.
Either way, you lose a second or so with each reload because you
have to leave a chamber empty, which will usually happen twice in
each stage, and three times if you miss at all, so a few seconds
each stage.

You might still beat some guys. In fact, you might beat some of
the autoloaders. Technically you're not competing with them, but
to me that's the most fun of shooting a wheelgun in competition.

So I say go for it, try it for a season, and then decide if the
competition and your own enjoyment of the game make it feel
worth buying a six-gun. Either way, have fun!

I've mostly shot in the CDP division so no real experience to offer. But if you are using speed loaders, you could mark the spot where the 7th round is missing, might help you index the empty chamber easier. As pointed out, it'll be hard but if you practice enough it could work.
Me personally, nothing would get me out of rhythm more than a click with no boom.

Thanks for all of the great advice. The group I shoot with have practice
a couple times a month and I plan to try it then. CPG's idea to mark the
speed loader to assist in indexing the cylinder is a good one. I will give
it a try, but like Pat, I am about as sharp as a ball bearing once the
start buzzer go off.
