Paused to take this snapshot of elk lounging around near the highway between Ellensburg & Wenatchee in central Washington yesterday.

They're looking pretty doggone fat & sassy considering the long, hard winter we had. Snow not far above this, lots of snow still...

Yes! A few antlers already. Elk amaze me that way. Some will carry their antlers to March, and in April some are sporting a decent set of new ones!

I wonder how many calories are spent, just growing those things every year?

We had a rough winter up where I hunt.
Haven't been up but some guys up there say it's taken a tole on the elk and deer.

Normal height fences like that don't seem to slow the elk much.

We do have orchards around here with STOUT 8' fences that tend to keep 'em out of the apple & cherry trees.

Beautiful animals. They re-introduced them on Fort Riley 25 years ago so we do see them here in Kansas. Hunting opportunities for them are pretty limited, but the older I get, the less desire I have for all the hard work associated with recovering one, so I'm pretty happy just getting to look at one now and then.

I was fortunate to have good help with me when I shot the cow elk in December. Work load wasn't too bad, spread out among a few of us.

And dang... The meat has been wonderful!
