My father in law recently acquired a Ruger
single six in 22 mag. He has purchased
several different brands (CCI, Winchester,
Hornady) to try. Just curious what others
like.

Doesn't matter to much what others like, you'll find the gun will tell
you what it likes.
That said the only .22 mags I see in Walmart are CCI. Now, it is
probably a different story at the LGS.
Buy a few brands to try and let the gun tell you which it likes the
best.

I tried some Remington Premier Magnum ammo in an old .22 WMR rifle I have. Seems like they are making more and better types of .22 WMR ammo than they did 35 years ago when I used to shoot it a lot. The thread I posted on it is here;

Had a great shooting Winchester pump 22 Mag wish I had not sold it but I did . With the 22 shortage I went with 22 hornet CZ 527 and it is a tack driver and I can load it for half the price of 22 Mag and get a little more yardage win win in my book.

I first got into the .22 Hornet because of the shortage and it sure is a fun little round. I shoot cast and duplicated .22 LR performance and it does that very well, I think it's more accurate than most .22 LRs and with 45 grains of free lead, two grains of powder and a small pistol primer, it's cheaper per round to shoot than a .22 LR if I don't count my time at the bench.

I count bench time as good time I don't shoot lead in my hornet but it still is cheap to shoot. We have been doing some shooting with our Ruger Mark 3s now that they have become more available again. Randy

My father in law has reuhmatoid(?)
arthritis and the recoil can get to him so
that's why he chose 22 mag. I too think
there are better options my favorite is a
218 bee pistol. Great round but brass can
be hard to find. The Hornady critical
defense ammo is interesting. Didn't now
you could find ammo as light as 28 gr and
heavy as 50 gr.
