I remember seeing that before they started using specialized Remington 700s and M-14s, the Model 70s were available in .30-06 with the bull barrels. Pics I've seen had them using Unertl scopes, I always wondered how something like that would stand up to field use.

I couldn't find a scope, base, or rings. Army didn't have that stuff then. So I contacted my father for that gear. He sent me a "care package" with a one piece Redfield base, a Redfield 6x "TV" widefield scope, and Redfield rings. But the army had cases of LC match '06 ammo. And an NVA "Oscar 6" hunter was born.
