Concentrate on the sight picture, when it looks right start loading the trigger, keep the sight picture until you feel the recoil. Simple enough but why do I not remember this until the second cylinder full?
Finally got done with my summer job last Wednesday and got back out to shoot today, my-o-my what a little lay off can do.

You're way ahead of me. Since everything goes left I don't even bother with a sight picture anymore. I have gone to the "sight cartoon".
In fact I no longer even shoot. I pick up chunks of lead from the backstop and throw them at the target. My groups are improving.

Go have fun Rex!

Keep banging away Rex. You're just a little rusty.

My shooting was interrupted for about 4 years by a 30' sailboat
(AKA, money hole in the water). I did keep my SS Ruger .44 on
board for informal shark shooting, but nothing serious. When I
went to a real range, my best groups were 12" at 50'. Seems my
eyesight had changed a bit and I had gone to tri-focals. I did
manage to shoot down the target hanger with my Puma (but I
was aiming 8" lower.)...

What did you do with the first cylinder full?

Ha! That's what I do with my pistols! I suspend 9" paper plates with a clothespin on a thin wire. At 15yds, I blow those things to pieces a lot! I really suck with a sixgun! Nice to know I'm not alone!

Might as well thrown them at the swing plate.

I'm whittling.38 caliber sticks as well as .44 and.45. My plan is to count those I shoot way off to the left that miss the paper plate and when my dogs aren't looking, I'll punch the correct caliber holes near the center. Not too many as to make it too obvious, but enough to fool my dogs I'm getting better. That way they'll let me hang out with em. They have a no looser policy in place. They've already kicked out two neighborhood dogs that didn't make the cut. I'll be selling these caliber specific sticks shortly. I figure if they can erase history by tearing down monuments and banning stuff, then poking a few extra holes in a target might get me a democratic seat in Congress!

I was just wandering. There was a time when I thought I was aiming but was actually looking over the sights.

Rex,

Most of us probably experience the same event after a little time away from the range. Even with rifles.

I know I do. It's eye opening.

Since my shooting stinks so bad that the smell is worse than..... You can imagine, figure I need to quite these damn handguns all together. If I ever intended to hit anything smaller than a Frieghtliner I'd best do with something other than a pistol!

I'm going to shotguns! Gonna keep my 1966 20ga Remington 870 Wingmaster stock. But I'm gonna get me another 870 in 12ga. Cut it down to legal length. Stick a magazine tube to fit on it and put a sling full of shells on it to look "tactic-cool". I'll install a lazer sight. A LED flashlight that can do double duty as a landing light on a B-52. A ventilated barrel cover. A Picitinny rail from breech to muzzle. And hang an 8 Track player on it with Ted Nugent playing Weekend Warrior on it! Naturally it will play Dixie and The Eyes of Texas as well, of course.
And slung over the shoulder,a bag full of more shells! Nope, I don't need no stinking handgun, I'll have the über slick mad dog shotgun system. Those cartoon character targets won't have a chance.

Lynn, I did, but they threw me out. Said I was nuts!

By the way, Savage makes a super cool 12ga pump for under 3 bills. Oh my....

You can get a Remington 870 Express for $350, and Remington usually
has an end of year rebate for $50. Finish isn't that good, but it is an
870. I like mine a lot. I use it for birds, deer, clays, and HD.

Yeah John, I have an 870 made in '66 in 20ga that's excellent. However, I won't buy anything Remington makes now. Same with Marlin. Quality control is a joke now. One that no one laughs at either. Sad really.

But yesterday I went to my pistol range with my trusty old S&W M&P to burn up a slew of LLA coated rounds in a bag that the lube migrated to the entire cartridge. Got bored shooting paper plates at 25. Ate out the centeres. Went to 50yds on the rifle range and hammered the 10"x10" iron plate continually shooting conventional two hand hold. Nuthin' wrong with a Smith double action!
