I gave up on Unique about 6 years ago when I tried Power Pistol and
Universal.    They meter much better and present very little clean up
after shooting.

I know the newer Unique is supposed to burn cleaner but never
noticed it.

Just bought 2 more pounds of Universal today. I haven't been this cranked up about gunpowder since I got American Pioneer Powder, and that was like a great discovery for me. Now a great smokeless powder for pistols? Yeah!

And yes, despite the company's claims of a cleaner burning Unique...... Nope, don't see it.
Naturally, I've got 5# of Unique here! Oh well..

Naturally

We all know how Unique is "good" in just about every caliber. Maybe not the best but good enough. Never quite hear of people hoarding W296 do ya? I personally prefer W231, oh well.

I see nothing wrong with pushing back 5 lbs or more of Unique. Yep, I've got my 5+ lbs pushed back too. Hmmmmm, maybe a "tad" more. Actually, while not as cost effective, the 1 lb bottles is really the good option.

Why?

Almost all reloaders know that Unique has a High Nitro count. And if you do your part, a shelf life of many decades if not longer. I personally date every reloading component I purchase with a sticker. I'm not one of those hard core preppers, but I do have my setup. In this regard I consider Unique as Legal Tinder. Just like the Stock Market, Interest Rates I monitor reloading prices online and in stores. A few years before King-O-Bama went in, Unique sale price dropped to below $14 a pound around here at one large independent outdoor sporting goods retailer. A little strange because only Alliant Powders really nose dived; the best deals were Bullseye and Unique? I loaded the truck with 1 pounders. You know the drill, fool me once (Slick Willy), fool me twice.

For the past 7+ years I have been liquidating these 1 pounders (oldest first, remember date everything) to friends that reload, happy to get them. Local retail like BASS PRO, Academy are still marking powder stuff $25 to $35 (circa 2017) a pound around here. And that's down from $35 to $50 a few years ago, if you could even put your hands on a pound. I undercut the Big Box boys 4 or 5 bucks and hand deliver at work or at the range.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.

I just stuck my finger in my good ear, as certainly you were a class 1 dealer redistributing powder for sale?

Good deal on the Universal. I have way too much Unique and
HP38/W231 on hand to buy another powder. I've gotten hooked again
on skeet this past spring and summer, after a long layoff, so my
handguns and rifles have been put down for awhile. I did just resize
and prime a bunch of .45 Colt cases. All ready to charge with 9 grains
of Unique and top with a 250 gr. cast RNFP. I think I will get out with the
Ruger Bisley next weekend.

Good info here... may have to try Universal and Unique both... right now I'm loading lilgun for my wheel guns and blue dot for my autos and happy with both but from the discussion i see some test loads and chrono'ing in my near future.

Yeah, today there's tons of different powder to choose from. When I started there was Hercules, DuPont, Alcan, and another but I forgot the name. And they had about a dozen to pick from. Not like today with each offering over 50 types each or more! Real confusing now. That's one of the reasons for my "consolidation loads" to cut down on too many powders. Suppose that's one of the reasons I'm so taken by Universal. Burns cleaner and uses less than Unique.
