Went out with my brother for the first day of archery season yesterday. We set up in an area of sparse woods, about 35 by 100 yards, and used a piece of camo netting to fashion a sort of ground blind. Our backs were to a river which I laser measured at about 65 yards across (more on that later). The bank was a steep ten foot or so drop.

Not more than half an hour after legal light, we could hear movement off to our right. Them deer sure seemed to be making quite a bit of noise, so we waited with baited breath. Then we heard splashing. So, my brother gets up all quiet like and turns around to have a look. Then he spins around with a stunned look on his face and whispers that there are three deer in the water. So I get up and creep over.

Sure enough, the deer had gone down the riverbank somewhere to our right and had walked right up behind us. The distance was maybe ten yards, but my brother couldn't get a shot he felt comfortable with because of the angle. As I came up, I spooked them by stepping on a branch, and off they went. Apparently, the rive is very shallow there and the deer use it as a ford.

No deer, but a good time on a beautiful morning. Maybe next time.

Since hunting is not my main source of food, just being in the woods and hunting is what it is all about. Actually seeing game is a plus after that whether I score or not. Bringing game home is always nice, but not the main fun for me.

Thanks, Guy, I think next time will be Friday, and Saturday.

Ham, I can't agree more. Actually, i think this was the closest my brother has been to game int he wild, so it was a cool thing for him to experience and for me to see.
