Got some frightening news yesterday. Drunk Neighbor and his friend are buying a mass of reloading gear. This is the same one that filled a small .50" brass signal cannon with over an ounce of Bullseye and blew it up amid a crowd of family and friends a few years ago. The same one that is convinced that the 45-70 can be loaded to 4,000fps. Basically, he's an idiot that has these unbelievable thoughts in his head that are just wrong. Sad part is that he believes his own nonsensical dribble.

I spent the better part of an hour trying to dissuade him from this notion, but to no avail. Years of experience with people as a peace officer tells me you can't reason with a drunk. But I felt I should try to stop it before he loads a .25'06 with a case full of Blue Dot and disintegrate a m700 and himself, and anyone nearby.

Talk of loading 300gr bullets in a.45ACP and mixing powders together for his "private blend" of powder. He's not going to be here much longer. And his buddy, though a nice guy, ain't real bright either. These two are the ones you see saying "Y'all watch this. Here, hold my beer, this is gonna be cool." And then fall off the rooftop into a pile of bricks. And they're going to reload. And Drunk Neighbor is convinced that reloading is simple and easy, and takes no time to do it. He's ordered a Lee progressive style press, a bunch of dies and components. I'm just grateful he's a hundred and fifty yards from me and behind a low hill.

Yup, some people shouldn't reload.

Natural selection can be a harsh mistress.

You've done your duty as a citizen now. Just try to not be around when it happens(and it will happen).

I couldn't agree more.   I'm thankful that I had a good teacher when I
started reloading and I think everyone starting out needs that.

One thing I always stuck to was I never reloaded anything after I had
been drinking, and I'm only a casual drinker.   But, I've been around
enough drunks to know better.

Reloading isn't the safest hobby and you need common sense to get
through it, some people just don't have that combination.

That's a good one, probably applies quite well in this instance.

Sad but true. This guy will not shut up to hear you. Hes constantly jabbering and trying to finish your sentences for you with what he wants to hear. It's impossible to tell him anything. I repeatedly tried to tell him exactly what he needs, but I was ignored. He went on about some really insane stuff. He's going to blow himself up, I just know it. He gets home at 5. By 6 he's hammered. Weekends he begins drinking when he gets up until he passes out. I hope he's got good life insurance. His widow will need it.

Now he did say that when all his gear arrives, he and his drinking bud might need some pointers. Honestly, I'd have greater success in teaching one of my cats!

Wade, all you can do is advise him. He may follow your advice or he
may not.   But in the end the alcohol will take over and be his doom.

When you posted this I was thinking about what I would do if he
came to me.   I had a cousin pretty much like him when it comes to
drinking.   I can still remember the day when he was going to cut a
tree down with a chainsaw. Luckily it didn't want to start and he kept
falling down.

I've got nothing against a drink or two. But that's pretty much my personal limit.

And... guns, ammo & alcohol just don't seem to mix real well.

Like I said, he doesn't listen and has these far fetched preconceptions about things that are, at best, pure fantasy and nonsense. He's going to do some damage, and nothing nor no one can stop it. I'm going to keep low and hope the shrapnel stays in his area. This will not end well.

Wade, I'm surprised at you. You most certainly can load a 45-70 to 4,000 fps; maybe 5,000 if you use Picric Acid. And reloading is very easy. You can use any powder, so just get what's on sale, and just fill the case all the way to the top. You have to use a bit of force to get the bullet in, but that's why you give it a good crimp. And blends? That's how you get just the right velocity profile.

If anything, you should be encouraging him.

I've run across those type of... people(?)... a time or two myself. I have come to the conclusion that if they blow themselves up. That's one less idiot that will be crying for medical assistance at our expense. Call me cruel or heartless, I really don't care. The gene pool is long over due for chlorine...

If you're going this far, may as well use a 10' long drop tube and fill it from upstairs!

You've done all you can to dissuade this idiot from canceling his own ticket. So now, set up the long-range cameras, make some popcorn, sit back and watch!

Get him to buy a .50 BMG and let him know Bullseye might be a good choice for powder.

Your description of this guy reminded me of this. Funny story about a guy who had a hare brained idea and wouldn't listen to anybody.

Wade, stop talking to him. If he survives or if he don;t he or his widow will say you taught him wrong and sue you. Stay safe and let nature take its course. Who knows, maybe he will get it and leave it in his garage packed in the boxes like so many others do.

Came back from a powder & primer run and got cornered by
drunk neighbor at my gate. I heard all the new stuff he's
been doing with a single stage press an Lee dies.
Complaints of sheering off brass in the sizing die.
Crushed and crumpled cases. Bent depriming pin. And he's
only started with the depriming die. He's got more to go
in his path of destruction! He doesn't even have
the press bolted down. He's bracing it in his lap and
wiggled around with it as such! Drunken hillbilly
reloading at it's finest!
Can't wait to hear about repriming... That's gonna be
good, I'll bet.

Geez...

Oh boy, the guy's watching other brainless idiots on
YouTube and that's compounding his lunacy. He's going on
about shredded edged projectiles that explode on contact.
350grHP bullets in a 45ACP at 1100fps. Complete cylinder
flat shaped 400gr wadcutter in the same caliber. And more
nonsense. When I explain these concepts violate the laws
of physics, he says he's got foolproof ideas. It would be
really comical if it wasn't for the obvious dangers of
his hairbrained ideas. Sadly, he simply refuses to
listen. He just rambles on with these idiot ideas.

I'll at least attempt to photograph the grisly evidence.

interesting to follow this thread.
