Talking to a guy on armslist about a 1886
highgrade. He says it is a New Haven build.
He said the serial # is OESLRH0409. I'm not
finding any winchesterling serial numbers
anything remotely like this on the wincheater
lookup or gun collector sites... anybody got
any thoughts on where/when this was made?
I've asked him for more pics of the barrel
engravings... we'll see what he send.

Got more pictures from the guy but all the ones with engraving were out of focus... the serial number he had listed in the ad was the serial number on the box... he claimed to be a collector and said it was a New Haven build but the box said "made in Japan" ... i dropped communications... the guy obviously has no idea what he is talking about and i'm betting it's just a scam... annoying that half the people on armslist are scammers... and most all the guns (even used ones) on gun broker are priced higher than you can buy at buds or wholesale hunter.

It's a good thing you were paying attention, the internet is full of people looking for a quick scam.

When I was dealing I always kept a pile of books on hand to get as much info on firearms as I could, you can't believe people even if they are looking you right in the eye. I'd be willing to bet that the out of focus pictures of the engraving were intentional to hide how bad it looked.

Ah, that must be one of those New Haven, Japan Winchesters.

Good catch. Gad to hear you got it on point before any money changed hands.

May not be a scam. Miroku is/has been producing the lever actions
for Winchester and they are very well made reflected by the price.

But, it bothers me that the serial # does not check out.

Except for the fact that New Haven is not in Japan. I would guess that the SN
on the gun, if it exists, does not match the box.

Collector?

Got a message from armslist administrators saying to cease correspondence with the seller as he was reported for scamming... I already had but nice to get my intuitions reinforced.

What luck to have the person caught.   There is far to much of this
going on in the world today.   What's needed is to make an example
of a few of these people.
