Bright and early this chilly 30-degree morning, went over to the gun club with two of my favorite handguns. Did a little 25 yard practice, mostly with the .22, then shot the 30-round police qual course with my .45 Kimber. Scored a 297/300, and felt pretty good about that.

Used my 185 gr handloads for the qual course, they sure do shoot nicely.

Regards, Guy

297/300 is excellentay!

My son is LEO (Homicide Det). He's also on SWAT. He
always give me a call when He does his qual. Hold on
here and listen to having to qualify...

As a Det. he has to qualify every 6 months Day and Night
shooting with duty issue...

Primary, G17, 240/300
Backup, G43
Shotgun, 870 14 inch riot
Rifle,   AR, irons

That's 4 times per weapon, 16 quals a year.

As SWAT, every 3 months Day and Night shooting his SWAT
weapons duty issue...

Primary, G34, 270/300
Backup, G19
Shotgun, 870 14 inch tactical with sights
Rifle,   AR, Dot

That's 8 times per weapon, 32 quals a year

That's 48 qual shooting a year.

His is dept is very flexible with hours and the range is
open from daylight to 10pm (city noise ordnance). He
shot 284 the other day with his G34, no warm-up, he was
pressed for time. He told me that every week he is at
the range shooting something. His dept has approx 250
sworn officer. Over the past 2 years, the entire dept
switch from 40SW back to 9mm. Range qual ammo cost were
a consideration I'm sure.

BTW, that's him in AVITAR at 16 with his 1st deer,
Marlin 1894, 240g Hard Cast/21g IMR4227 we loaded on the
RC.

Yup - I was on SWAT for 12 years of my career in law enforcement. And a firearms instructor for 17.

Seems like I was constantly shooting some kind of qual course or another.

Now? I shoot the same courses, for fun!

Truth be told, they were fun then too.

Could you guys detail the police qual course?

curious how different the LEO qual is from the USMC course... quite a bit i imagine.
