Was just perusing my reloading manual and
glanced at 500sw load data... it has loads
for 400gr loads with 30+ grains of lilgun...
I love my lilgun in my 44mag behind 300gr
bullets and 357 with 200gr bullets... was
thinking... hmmm... why not lilgun for 45-70
if it's spec'd for 500sw in both pistol and
contender...

Thoughts?

I've never used Lil Gun so no experience, but you may have something, there. Surely Lil Gun has been around long enough that if it's suitable for the .45-70, someone has published data for it.

If it has I haven't been able to find it...
which is odd... it's used in 410. Then triple
the powder and is in 500sw... no rifle data
in it at all... they even exclude it from the
44mag and 357 load data in my Lyman in the
rifle section.

... I realised there is no real reason to do
this as another powder will outperform it in
this application... just a point of
curiosity.

I looked on Loaddata.com and they have nothing for 45-70 and Lil'Gun. They would be most likely to if it were suitable. I suspect Lil'Gun is a bit like H110/Win 296 in that it needs to be loaded pretty much at maximum to work well and that would not be suitable in that large case.

I think you're inviting trouble, but what do I know?

At the moment the only actual lilgun load I
am planning in 45-70 is 12grs under an 300gr
shot load... which is whats spec'd for 410...
just saw the 500sw data and got me pondering
what might be possible...

Lil Gun is supposed to be the best stuff going for .22 Hornet. Can't comment because I don't load jacketed full power loads in my Hornets.

I like Lil'Gun powder in my magnum revolvers as well as my .22 K-Hornet. I get great accuracy and higher velocity with lesser pressure than other comparable powders. It heats up the barrels very quickly and that indicates a lot of nitroglycerin in it's formula I suspect.

Hodgdon does not list Lil'Gun powder for the 45-70. The fastest burning of their powders that they list for the 45-70 is H-4198. However, reduced loads using Lil'Gun might be something to check into. The burning speed is not all that much faster than H-4198, but for sure one needs to get some very good input from a ballistics expert first.

Don't know if you guys saw my range report in
the general thread... didn't go for 500sw
loads but did try some 410 loads... the
lilgun proved to be VERY position
sensative...in loads where there wasnt a lot
of excess spce it perfomed predictably
however.. has me thinking the 500sw level
load may be just fine with a filler to hold
powder in place.... will start out weak and
build up for next range trip.
