The .300 H&H is really the only .30 caliber bigger than a .30-06 I've got much interest in. Almost pulled the trigger on one a few years ago and didn't. Probably just as well. Too many projects.

I mostly shoot cast now and got a whole lot of various .30 calibers from Dad on top of all the others I already had. Bought an old Santa Barbara arms rifles (commercial Mauser with a plain, no frill stock) cheap with the intent of having it rebored to .35 Whelen. It was missing the buttplate so it sat around til I got around to having a good recoil pad installed, got it home and decided to try some loads in it just to make sure all was well with the action before converting it. Well, spent all day between the loading bench and the shooting bench with various things and a few hundred rounds down range I'm not so sure I want it as a Whelen anymore.

My old beat up late 60s Model 70 always liked a 165 grain bullet, seems like Sierra's were the ones I used but it wasn't picky and just about a max load of Winchester 760 was the ticket. Shot really well and I'm sure that would flatten anything I'm likely to need to shoot. Nothing really special about it, just a good, general purpose rifle. I take it out now and then for a range session then clean it and put it back in the rack now, haven't hunted with it in a long time but she's still got what it takes if I ever do.

I too thought about having my old 1917 30-06 re-bored to 35 Whelen, but the 30-06 is just such a great cartridge...

Couldn't bring myself to change it.

Perhaps I'll have to buy a 35 Whelen someday!

"Both my wife & my 30-06 use 168 gr Berger VLDs with Win 296 powder
(I think, gotta look at my data to be sure). "

I'll second that. W296 is a powder for magnum handguns. Might make
for a kaboom in an 06. Wonder if you were thinking W760? That works
good with that weight bullet. I run the Nosler accubond close to 2900
FPS with W760.

Yeppers, I looked you are right. That is EXACTLY why I refuse to think I have a load memorized LOL. I always read the card before I do a BAD KABOOBA!
Learned that "never memorize" trick from my RN career. Saw a nurse give the wrong dose cuz she thought she had it memorized. Thankfully the error did not have a terminal or harming effect.
