I reckon 86 years is a good lifespan for an abused and
poorly maintained 22 pump. When I got it well, it was a
piece of rust and not functioning hardly at all. A $5
garage sale special I ended up with. Oh I cleaned it up
as best as could be done. But I noticed it would hang up
some ejecting LR empties. Shorts were fine though. A
former stepson [hated that brat!] took sandpaper to the
receiver and destroyed the dark patina.

I'd shoot this old pump some, but mostly my 22 stuff was
with an '02 Marlin mod 60 that I gave to my granddaughter
for Christmas a few months back. So today I grabbed up
about 50 rounds of LR and headed out to the woods. Bad
idea. First 5 all failed to extract. Ejection is fine,
but the case moved 1/8" out and then the extractors, yes
one on each side, simply can no longer pull the empty
from the old heavily pitted chamber. I pronounced it dead
at the scene. Cleaned it and now will look for another 22
rifle. The old Stevens is not worth repairing and parts
are not to be found.

That's a bummer, Wade. There should be some good old .22 around. Got any pawn shops or such around?

If it's the one I think it is, it was also marketed as the Savage Model 29, might help with a parts search.

Probably not much collector value to one, but seems a shame to let it die. If it's a pitted barrel and chamber, re-lining could be an option. I'm not getting to Texas regularly anymore, but if I was, I might buy that off of you to see what could be done, I like vintage pump .22s like that.

Got two pawnshops in town. I'll find one around. Like to
get a Henry
but can't see paying over $300 for a .22 rifle.
I'll see if I can find an older Real Marlin mod 60 again.
Or maybe a new Mossberg. We'll see huh?

Rich, this one's really not worth repairing. When I was
in the gunsmith business I would have turned this one
away advising it would cost more to repair it than to
replace it.

Maybe so, but in this day and age of throw away .22s, I hate to see one like that given up.

Well it still shoots shorts with a fair certainty, but
shorts cost far more than LR and are impossible to find
locally. But it will still hiccup now and then on shorts.
Naw, best to hang it up and get something more up to date
and functional.

Rex, I appreciate it but I don't have the cash to spare.
