Yah, I know guys, long time since I have
been active on this board. Or any
internet gun board. Reason being I was
really into handloading and
casting/swagging shotgun slugs and several
years ago a private contractor firm (think
blackwater types) contacted me based on my
posts and trading cast slugs especially
the very heavy 800+ grain weight slugs and
the resulting damage they were capable of
producing. They wanted me to make up a
bunch of such loads for them to test, I
told them I didn't mess with making loaded
rounds for anyone but myself and only
would make cast slugs only for others and
I didn't like their attitude in the way
they contacted me and so I wouldn't make
even just the cast lead slugs for them to
load themselves or share specifications or
load development info with them beyond
what I had already publicly posted. They
didn't like that response and my next
contact a couple days later was from the
ATF asking whether it was true or not that
I had been reloading ammo and selling it
without a license. I explained most
certainly not and that I had only been
doing just the cast lead slugs only to
other reloaders which apparently if they
want to get real technical can be an issue
as well if they decide they really want to
press it. Anyway, it all worked out okay
and the ATF eventually realized it was a
malicious retaliation complaint. Anyway
I've been keeping my head down online ever
since. But it's been long enough now that
I'm willing to poke my head back up a
little.

Anyway, before they decide to ban/tighten-
up ability to purchase semi-auto rifles I
plan on getting at least one that fires
8x57 and is a solid accurate battle rifle
capable of being used in a DMR capacity if
necessary.

Why 8x57 ?

Well years ago provided one purchased in
sufficient quantity you could purchase
surplus ammo in that caliber as low as
2.5 per round. I bought in quantity.

Already have multiple bolt action guns in
that chambering and it's good reasonably
accurate ammo. But I have no semi-auto
capability in that chambering and cost
wise it is a way better option to purchase
a gun to fit the ammo rather then buy ammo
of a different chambering to fit more
commonly available semi-auto platforms
even considering the cheapest 5.56/223,
7.62/308, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, etc . . . ammo
available.

Options I have researched so far are:

Egyptian FN-49
Egyptian Hakim
Yugo M-76

Do any of you guys have any other
suggestions to research or other available
options beyond those three that you are
aware of that I should look into?

I do intend to fabricate an off center to
the left scope mount like used on the
Garand if I go for either the Hakim or M-
49 options. Hakim is attractive to me due
to it's Swedish roots and reputation of
exceptional accuracy. But the M-49 has
the better set of iron sights (which is
very important to me as well and why in
many ways I prefer an offset Garand style
scope).

Yugo M-76 is a DMR from the get go but
it's iron sights are as bad or worse then
the Hakim plus with the scope mounted it
is very unnatural to use them. Plus the
AK based system with it's pinned barrel
doesn't exactly inspire confidence in
accuracy regardless of how much has been
done to try to accurize the gun.

My brother likes his FN '49 a lot. There are also the Hakims which I have heard good things about. Not sure what else in 8x57, but it's a great cartridge.

It's good to see you back. I'd wondered what happened to you here and on castboolits. I've started to dabble in shotgun reloading for various round balls and soon slugs, been reading quite a few of your old posts.

Yah, can't help you with any cast slugs
though. Technically casting slugs or any
cast bullet is manufacturing ammo
components and if you sell or even just
trade them even with just a buddy it's
technically a violation unless you have a
manufacturing license from the ATF. A lot
of guys thus are in violation at one point
or another without realizing it and it
seems they usually don't prosecute, but I
have to keep my nose extra clean. Let me
off with a "don't do it again" warning and
that probably wouldn't happen again.

As far as info though, no problems there.
Also a friendly warning, YouTube videos
can attract the wrong kind of attention to
yourself. Friend shot some video of what
some of my slugs did to a concrete wall
and posted it on YouTube and that's what
attracted the attention of the contractors
which contacted him wanting to know how to
contact me. Not sure if all contractors
are $#@&"@ like they were but they
certainly we're the wrong type of people's
attention to attract.

If you have any questions about slugs from
me though we should probably should start
a different thread.

Thanks for what you could confirm on the
FN-49. Your brother know how well the
mags interchange on the FN-49? For both
the Hakim and M-76 additional mags are
expensive but available and confirmed to
fit and interchange but for the FN-49 not
so much on availability and what is
available is not always the same cartridge
due to the multiple chambering that gun
was made in. Your brother know if the
mags are actually different for the
different chambering and the mag Wells
different or did they use all the same
mags?
