Here's my Ruger #1 with the new 2.5X Leupold. That's 28" of global warming in the background. April fools joke a couple weeks late?
My old chrony records from a couple decades ago show 405 Speer jacketed at 1900+ fps and 350 gr. Hornady at over 2000 fps! But...I was young and foolish then...just barely 50 or so.
This go around I'm gonna focus on lighter bullets in the 1300 to 1500 fps range. I've got molds for the RCBS 300 and 400 gr. GC's and Lee 340. Thinking about getting a Lyman 330 gr. HP and casting it soft and sized to .459" over about 32 gr. of 5744....Yup getting old and soft.

The Lee 340 is a good bullet. I also have a 300 grain SAECO and the Lyman 330 grain. Used the Lyman because my dad cast it last year and with 30 grains of 5744, had no trouble laying a doe out cold. Guys all seem to want to make the .45-70 into a fire breather, but it works great at Trapdoor levels.
Nice rifle, by the way.

I replaced the stock on my Ruger #3 with a Ruger # 1 stock.
Load a 560 gr flat nose with 45 gr of IMR 3031.
Let the kid I hunt with hunt with it about 5 years ago.
He shot a very large 4 point buck with it at about 60 Yds.
The deer didn't go very far.....

Older and softer, that's me.
This year I started loading my 308 down with 125 grain bullets and 40.0 grain H4895. Recoil reduced significantly; lot more fun to shoot on this old man's shoulder.
Still moving the bullet at about 2,500 ft/s, plenty of energy for a 200 yard shot on a deer. In 40+ years of deer hunting in the east never shot one beyond 185 yards so I think I'm good to go.

I'm north of Green Bay. Got 2nd season turkey tag and wondering if I need snowshoes to hunt turkeys!

When I first got this rifle I had to do what every young (?) guy does on a road test....Take 'er out and see what she's got! I ran out of steam before I got to "Ruger Only" max loads. I've had some experience with .454's on deer and trapdoor level starting loads are equal to a full house .454.

I've never burned any 3031 but it sure does seem to make a good showing for itself in the .45/70.

I sight in a lot of deer hunters when we open our range to the public every fall. From the amount of flinching I see I'd guess a large percentage of the once a year shooters would be much better off with your .308 load.

The 4.9" eye relief on the Leupold works out pretty good. I still had to mount it far back but still left a little gap between ring and turret housing. When I snap it up to my shoulder quickly it's right there. I used Burris rings with the offset inserts so the scope is still near the center of adjustment and it's sighted in. The poly-whatever inserts also keep the scope from getting marred up.
I'd like to tag a deer with it this fall but the herd in northern Wisc. where I hunt was already winter stressed before this last couple of feet of heavy and wet. We'll see.

Yep Ranger... ..carrying handle. I think the #1's are about the best looking factory rifle made and it's a sacrilege to mount a scope on it....but the big juicy buck wouldn't have much to worry about if he showed up at dawn or dusk. Iron sights just don't work that well for me no more.

Randy, I'm glad to see that you are taking full advantage
of devices to keep you in the game at 100%. You are a

Ditto!
Clobbered big hogs with it and always one shot a piece.
1" patterns at a hundred with RX7 and the Marlin Guide
Gun off a sandbag. Good bullet!

My 340 Lee mold drops at .458" so I powder coated a few to fatten them up a bit. Then ran them through .459" sizer and lubed with Carnauba Red. They are cast soft and sure oughta be slippery enough. Just gonna eggsperiment a little...
