Stopped at my youngest daughter and son-in-law's home on a trip to the eastern part of our state this weekend. 12 year old Grandson ask if I'd like to go watch him shoot. Their 4H club offers BB gun and archery shooting so one of the fathers who belongs to a local shooting range started a youth rifle and pistol shooting club. Ages ranged from 12 up to a senior in high school girl.
This fellow was using a great adult range. The kids were taught proper manners and loading, handling and shooting instruction while always stressing safety.
Grandson and never shot .22 rifle or handgun before. He used a little Browning auto rifle I had given him soon after birth and his Dad had a new Walther P22 handgun. He had shot neither before. They set up targets at 25 yards for the rifle and 15 for the handgun. They were taught to remove the magazine, close the action, load, insert magazine, point the weapon in a safe direction and load the chamber, take off safety and proper stance and fire. Once the last shot was taken they put on the safety, removed the magazine and opened the action and place the firearm on their table.
I was amazed at the Grandson's shoot especially for the first time! His Daddy is a 20 some year cop and talked to him about adjusting his grip to place his shots where they should go. There is a trap range, a skeet range, a club house and two fishing ponds on the property. I watched Daddy buy a $40.00 yearly membership. What a bargain and what generosity of adults time for these kids.

That put a wide grin of admiration across my wrinkled
face. As with Guy's statement echoing in my head...
Outstanding!

Great job!

I wish I could find a set up like that around here, I hardly ever see children at the public range I shoot at.

My Granddaughter shot her first center fire rifle last September, which she didn't want to do but can't wait to shoot it again. We bought a used Walther P22 for her for Christmas and if the weather ever warms up she's going to start serious handgun training this year.
