One of the Sherriff deputies brought S&W 500 to the range. It was ported, had a nice trigger, and He was letting anyone that wanted to shoot it. So I did. It was the first time I've even handled one, let alone shoot it.... With the porting on the 500 I do believe my .44 was a lot more violent.... And I got to keep a spent round for my collection!

I've never messed with one but the round looks quite impressive.

All these exotic monster handguns escape logic.
If you need more than a 44 or 45 then get a 12ga.
Anything bigger? Call in artillery or an air strike.

Was it a long barreled one or one of those
short barreled ones that look like someone
made a double size snub nose?

I've shot both, do not care for the
oversized snub-nosed version one little
bit. Supposedly they are for defense
against bears in a packable size but I'd
personally either go for a longer barrel
version regardless of the extra length,
bulk, and weight or drop down to a 44 or
heavy loaded 45 if going with a short
barrel. The big 500 in a short barrel is
just darn obnoxious to shoot!

My S&W 500 Magnum is a 7.5" and has less recoil then my M 29.
Hey Ranger? You want NGFS from a 5" 38 or a 16" 50?

This is what the short barreled versions look like:

They are not fun to shoot, massive muzzle flash
(practically flame thrower), massive concussion, massive
vicious harsh twisting recoil. Long barreled versions
are much better.

I believe it had a slightly longer barrel and it was ported. The barrel wasn't much longer, or maybe the porting made it look longer. I don't want one, Don't need it to kill paper with...
Looking @ the S&W website it was the 4" ported....

Bought mine, sight unseen, back in 2003, when they were first introduced. Dealer ordered it for me, and by the time it arrived, I had 100 rounds handloaded for it, as well as a box of 350 grain Hornady ammo.

It's been an awful lot of fun at the range over the years, but I've never even taken it hunting. Not once. Ah well. It's a fun range toy. Perhaps someday I'll go punch a 440 gr hard cast bullet through a game animal.

Several friends of mine have shot it. Usually I don't shoot it more than 10 - 20 times at a range session, then it's time for a break. I don't think I've ever shot more than 100 rounds of 500 S&W in a year.

The revolver sure seems to be built well, and is quite accurate. I think it would be great for bear hunting!

Regards, Guy

I have the 629 Classic and the 460 Mag and find that the 44
has more "bite" to it than the 460...

So does the 44 Mag BlackHawk in my opinion ....the 460
is more pleasant and so is the BFR 45-70.........
