Okay - this was a big one for me.

42 miles on my mountain bike this morning and 3300+ feet of gain. Feeling real good about pulling that one off, at age 62. Oooh Rah! :)

Roughly 20 year old Trek mountain bike, built here I the USA:

Right through my favorite mule deer hunting country:

I'm feeling real good about this accomplishment. :)

Uphill both ways.

There was a mighty nice, long, downhill paved run after hours of climbing on dirt roads. That downhill run was excellent, and took me to a real nice little place that serves great coffee.

I enjoyed.

I need to get an exercise regimen going, deer recovery has become a challenge the past few years. The dragging a deer cart back to the truck through rough terrain is a whole body work out and then some.

Back when I was young and working at it, I could squat and dead lift weights out of proportion for the size I was and was figuring I need to start hitting a gym again and working that since that seems to be what I need for the task, kind of wonder if the mountain biking might do the lower body work out better anyway. Goodness knows I have plenty of dirt road right here and #2 son has a decent bike out under the car port that's just gathering dust. I won't be doing 42 miles anytime soon though.

During cycling season, I don't do a lot of squats, leg-press, that sort of thing.

If there are any hills to pedal up, the legs get a great workout. That 42 miler of mine had almost 3400' of vertical gain, that's a lot for a recreational rider.

Weights help tremendously though. As hunters, we can use both cardio and strength training.

So do you hunt via mountain bike as well like I do? Or
is this just to get you in shape for hunting on foot?

I don't know about your state but in Montana, so long as
a bicycle is powered by human pedal power alone it is
completely legal to hunt using them including firing
without dismounting the bicycle (except on public right
of way roadways of course, you can't be cycling down the
highway and start blasting, logging roads and trails its
not a problem).

Normally I hunt on foot, but I have used the mountain bike to move quickly and quietly along gated Forest Service & logging roads.

Mostly though, I just ride for fun!

Today was 18.6 miles with 1764' elevation gain. Steep doggone dirt road. I'll get farther up that hill next time!
