Few months back I got my hands on a 1940 Gillette Tech
fat handle double edge
razor in gold. 98% or better finish and shaves as good as
it looks. Before this
one I've been using my Gillette adjustable I bought new
at the PX in 68 as the
army took my straight razor saying it was a weapon and
forbidden in basic.

Back to the '40 model... Been using a mug & brush since I
started shaving.
Aftershave usually Old Spice, Mennen, and such. But a
while back I was at a
local drug store that carried some of the old Pinaud line
of products. Found the
original Pinaud Aftershave and their Virgin Islands Bay
Rum aftershave. Bought
one each. Was like going back 60 plus years with my dad
to the barber shop. And
yesterday I was at the market in town doing my normal
grocery shopping. But I
noticed a few ladies there would stop or turn as I
passed. Well I'm not as
pretty as I was when young but it made me kinda self
conscious. And a woman in
her 40's said "Bay Rum, right?". I stopped for a second
and said yes it was. She
grinned and said "I thought so. My dad and grandfather
wore that. You sir, smell
like a man oughta smell. 100% Masculine." I tipped my
Stetson and thanked her
for the compliment.

Though the incident in the marketplace was a mild bump to
my aging ego, I found
another thing Bay Rum does besides get you noticed by the
ladies. It is not
popular with mosquitoes! Was on my gun range yesterday
and today playing
Hopalong Cassidy with some single actions. At no time was
I "bugged" by
skeeters. Not once. It was like they got one whiff of my
Bay Rum and headed for
the hills!

Now I recall my 1st wife touting up Avon's Skin So Soft
oil as a skeeter
repellent but it was slippery, slimey, oily, and smelled
all "girly-fied" !

So there's a report of a really different angle.
So if you old coot wanna turn a lady's head and define
how a man should smell,
Bay Rum boys! Wanna go into the woods and piss off a
bunch of bugs? You got it..
Bay Rum!

Edit; don't know what happened to the margins and spacing
here.

What I wear for aftershave is some
homemade stuff my woman made up herself
and gave to me and told me to use.

She told me she makes it by mixing the
following soap and body sending oils into
a premixed sentless aftershave base she
buys from some online crafting store:

"Ozark Forest"
"Evergreen"
"Oak Barrel Rum"
"Spiced Rum"
"Cinnamon"
"Vannila"

Didn't tell me the proportions of each of
those but I can tell you it makes me smell
like I just came from a sawmill right next
to a rum spice cake factory located in the
woods somewhere.

Gotten a few compliments from a few other
females over the years about how it makes
me smell but not a huge many.

It's the way my woman wants me to smell
though to the point where she mixes it up
herself for me, so that's what really
counts. I like it to a small extent
myself, only a small extent because I
really don't care what I smell like so
long as I don't stink bad.

Besides even if I didn't like it, not like
I could get away with not wearing it.

No skeeter advantages unfortunately.

Whew!!!

I knew, I just knew you were going to report that Bay Rum cleans copper fouling from gun barrels or slicks up the bolt carrier group on the AR.

You really had me worried!

The reason I stopped using my straight razor is my right
side of my face is sorta numb from the stroke. Feels all
"mushy" and I keep cutting myself. So I switched back to
double edged razors so I can stop bleeding. Found some
great blades too from Japan, S. Korea, and Egypt. And one
from Russia.

Though I may go a week or two with no human contact, I
shave everyday. I believe a man must be well groomed at
all times. And the Bay Rum takes me back to a better time
for a bit when this country wasn't busy tearing itself
apart.

Shaving, a pretty useless past time, I shave once a week if I go into the settlement.

I have a lovely old straight razor, that makes a great patch knife.

As far as insect repellent, I see maybe two mosquitoes during the summer months.

Alaska was a different matter, lots of mosquitoes there, some folks because of body chemistry, are less likely to attract mosquitoes.

I put vinegar in my horses drinking water and that acts as a repellent.

I grow a beard every November to look like Santa Claus (in
more ways than one)
A couple of years ago I forgot to shave it off.

I am now looking for a job posing for Holy pictures and
Mass cards.....

Terribly sorry y'all prefer being scruffy and mildly
inebriated. I suppose it must be a Navy thing.

No it's called being retired, living in the mountains and not having to please anyone else.

Hummmmmm.

Let's see......

I'm retired.

I live alone in the woods.

I answer to no one on earth.

Yet I have an "inspection grade" haircut and shave daily.
I detest being " unkept" in my appearance.

Reckon it's my background and upbringing.

Due to the meds the doctors have me taking they told me
not to use anything but an electric razor, due to the fact
that a cut could do me in.....And I hate to shave, but I
will because I have a wife that sometimes takes me to her
job ( a school) and all of the other teachers eyeball me.
I like Old Spice, but if Bay Rum will keep the skeeters
away, it's worth a try. I bet the guys at the old timey
genuine barber shop know where I can find some.

My beard is seasonal. Late fall when the
air gets a crisp to it I let it grow out
but keep it trimmed with the 1/4 comb so
it's a thin layer but high density
insulation for my face. Come spring thaw
it gets shaved off and stays shaved until
the seasonal cycle begins again.

Once again I'm walking away from one of my posts before I
say something that would be detrimental to the harmony of
this site and it's general populace. My patience wears
thin none the less.
Thus I'm taking a break from this site for a while.

My beard is permanent and has been for many years. I keep it trimmed neatly. Don't plan to take it off.

And.....it works way better than "Bay Rum"!

There was one girl who said she'd not let anybody with a beard into her bed! She needed not worry!

They make a product called "Ogallala Bay Rum" here locally, I haven't tried it yet but will have to give it a go. It's been a while since I've impressed any girls and I don't think after shave will help.
