Good. Maybe I'll get to find out if the new ones have it or not, ... someday.

Finally, got it last Thursday. You'd think an old retired guy cold find ten min
to pop a cap, ... but...

I did go ahead and load some 405 Gr FP cast over 15.5 gr Unique to test it
out (when I get the chance. Maybe Wednesday afternoon). I'll post some pics
then of targets and the rifle.

Looking forward to hearing about it. Having a lever gun .45-70 has been on my bucket list a while now and I'm kind of inclined to get a Henry rather than the current Marlins.

That 15.5 grains of Unique ought to be a pleasant load to shoot.

I also loaded some 41 Mag for the Big Boy Steel that came with it (Henrys
should never travel alone, and evidently with good reason. they go from
Ohio to Texas by way of Virginia!) I put a 210 gr cast bullet over 9.5 gr
Unique. The BBS 41 mag will compliment my S&W Mod 58.

Same here Alan
It also handles 41 SPL very well ......I like mine a lot
...... I put a bunch of bullets 170-215 gr over 6 grns of
Unique and was very pleased from both the Henry and the
S&W 58

Well, that's just great... Now there's a 41 Spl? Now I'll have that to worry
about until that until I have a full contingent of brass and dies.....

Do they sell brass or do you just trim it from mag brass? I didn't know there
was such a thing.

There's always one more thing.

Well, I guess I haven't been paying attention. Seems it's been around for a
while. After reading a bit on it though, I'll likely continue only with the 41
mag loading. Destroying 41 mag brass to make a reduced 41 spl loading
doesn't seem like it's cost effective to me at this point. Perhaps if it were
commercially loaded or available...

Oh but it is! Starline makes the brass.

But then there's the dies...

Discouraging....

41 mag shot terrible. 210 SWC sized to .410. 9.5 gr Unique. All over the
place, and I mean ALL OVER. As much as 3 feet off point of aim at 50 yards.
I really didn't expect that. I guess I'll slug the bore and shoot some factory
ammo in it to get a baseline.

45/70 wasn't as bad but wasn't good. 405 gr RNFP 15.5 gr Unique.
Shooting 2 feet low at 50 yards. Key holing at 25 yards.

Same for it. slug the bore and try some factory ammo.

Before slugging barrels, I measured bullets.

Sized 45/70 - .456
As cast 45/70 - .456

Sized 41 mag - .405
As cast 41 mag - .405

Maybe rattling down the barrel is affecting accuracy?

Both barrels were leaded worse than any I've seen in over 50 years of
shooting.

I dumped the alloy in my pot. Going to cast some pure lead to measure
bullets again.

Pure lead was worse.

.452
.405

Two different calipers, same reading. I'm done for the day.

Man I truly hate to say it......hard to even come off my
tongue........but maybe a few store bought rounds down
the barrels ???

I know being a Scot and all it might mean being removed
from you clan for such and extravagant measure ???

Do it in secret

What brand of molds ???

Scotch/Irish.   Lee of course...

I've already resigned myself to Having to shoot a few store bought rounds.
Unfortunately they only sell them by the box of twenty....

I'll know more about that tomorrow afternoon.

Contact Lee ....they may have advice ....something else is
usually at fault if 2 molds are throwing too small but try
Lee first
How do they measure before sizing ???
I have had as good of luck with most of my Lee molds as any
others .....USUALLY ....

Keep us posted....

The 41 mag mold threw a .405 bullet with alloy and pure lead. It evidently
goes through the sizer untouched (the rifle barrel too judging from the
accuracy).

The 45/70 mold threw a .4555/.456 bullet with alloy and .452 (!) with pure
lead. It too evidently does not increase in size by passing through the sizer.

Lead was coming out of the barrels of both rifles in flakes.

I do not think it is the mold or the rifles. But, I don't know what it is. I'm
going to have to shoot some factory ammo and some commercial cast that I
can measure and be assured that it is .457/.458/.459 whatever it needs to
be. Then I can figure out how to cast what I need.

Sounds to me like your molds weren't hot
enough. Hard to diagnose though without
actually being there. Try casting with
hot alloy and a brisk pace until they are
comming out "frosted" and check the as
cast size.

I will try that.

I'm also going to cast some with straight linotype and see how those
measure.

I usually use linotype for my rifle bullets and cast handgun bullets with WW.

I also use gas checks on my other rifle bullets. I was really kind of looking
forward to not messing with the GCs on this 45/70. May have to go that
route.

I like to cast, load and hunt with my ammoIf I could make powder and
primers I would do that too.

Wish I had good news to report.

While aiming at the target on the far left, 50 yards, the first shot from the 41
mag with factory Sierra bullets was the hole at 5:00 under the bull on the
right... The hole at 4:00 on the left hand bull was shot at 10 yards... The rest
were from 50 yards aiming at the target on the left.

Shooting 1.5' groups 1' to the right.

Using Remington factory ammo. 50 yards. Aiming at the bottom of the
center bull on the top, ... first shot was below the lower target. Subsequent
shots were as I increased elevation. Hole under the top bull was at max
elevation from 10 yards...

All shots were low.

41 mag. L>R. first shot. Next eight, decided to stop before something bad
happened.

8/9 shots split new cases 3/4 of their length. 9.5 gr Unique 210 gr Sierra
jacketed soft point.

Truthfully, I have never been so disappointed in my life (with guns) as I am
with these two latest.

I've contacted Henry. Waiting patiently for a reply.
