I have shot the limited number of commercial 41 mag that I had. No
problems. They were an anemic pure lead cast load. Probably a cowboy
action type load. They were loose rounds that came with the mod 58 when I
got it. I saved them for "just in case".
I don't know what the deal is with this rifle. Even if it wasn't splitting cases
it's still all over the paper, even at 50 yards. The 41 mag from a rifle should
be very accurate. I haven't shot cast bullets in it since the first day.
Everything since then has been Sierra JSP.
I've shot deer at close range with a 357 mag from both revolver and rifle
(Mod 92 Win conversion) with HP cast bullets. I was looking forward to doing
the same with the 41 mag.
I had already planned on getting a BB Steel in 44 mag next to round out my
pistol/rifle combos, but this thing with the 41 has kinda put a crimp in that
I've got a marlin 1894 in 45 Colt that does not shoot as well as the BB Brass.
I have only shot my cast reloads in both of them as well.
Deer don't tolerate shiny brass flashing around in the woods, so the Henry
Brass is of little use in the woods. The marlin will likely shoot factory or
jacketed bullets well. I can't shoot cast in my other Marlins either. Those
microgroove lines they call rifling won't catch a cast bullet.
I am determined to make the 45-70 shoot cast bullets though. It'll mean
playing with the sizing until I find the sweet spot.
