My mold is one of the original Ranchdogs, but I believe the same bullet is made by NOE. The guy designed them to hunt with in Microgroove Marlin lever guns and use liquid alox so it is a tumble lube design, though I ran these through a regular .311 die on my Lyman 450.

A year or two back, I picked up a beat up old Santa Barbara Mauser with the intent of having it rebored to .35 Whelen, but in the meantime, I slapped a cheap Bushnell on it and have been using it as a platform for informal plinking to use up a whole lot of cast .30 caliber bullets my dad had cast up.

So today, with idle time, I went out and loaded a few rounds using this Ranchdog bullet and ten grains of Hi Score 700X. A few shots to get it zeroed, then she cooly shot a five shot group from my shaky bench with the light fading fast into an inch at 100 yards. Four of them went easily into 3/4". Considering a rifle that isn't exactly high end and less than stellar shooting conditions, I'm pretty pleased, especially since that is a hunting bullet and not a target bullet.

Maybe that old Santa Barbara will stay a .30-06.

I have a Handi Rifle in .35 Whelen, it's actually a decent shooter too. I've kinda lost interest in getting serious about a .35 Whelen anyway, there's nothing I'm like to do that a .30-06 isn't overkill for, even with cast.

Never with an '06, but that Ranchdog bullet has been a good deer killer for me, just don't remember it being this accurate, but this is also slower than I used to make hunting loads with.

700X was the first powder on my bench years ago. Shot
through it in 38 Special but never tried it in a rifle. I
see it can work just fine.

My old Lyman cast manual probably has as much or more load data for 700X than it does for Unique. As it is, I am sitting on more 700X than I'll probably get shot up at this rather before I'm taking the old dirt nap. Good situation to be in. Seems to be as good as Unique in cast rifle applications.

Of course, some, probably a lot, will get shot in various handguns as well. Possibly a shotgun or two.

I have that mold, an old original but it was made by Lee,
or at least shipped in a Lee box. It shoots well, but I
prefer my ancient Lee 160 gr single cavity bullet for my
30/30
