This may be an appropriate place to mention that the
AR15 and likely most gas operated firearms are cycled
according to dwell time which is the distance from the
gas port to the muzzle.
There must be enough pressure between the gas port and
the muzzle in order to cycle the action properly.
Changing the powder or powder charge weight will vary
the peak pressure, the pressure curve and also the
remaining pressure available to cycle the action
without causing the cycle to be too violent.
Hodgdon recommends H4895 as the powder to use for
reduced loads. Their formula is down to 60% of a full
power load for cartridges that use H4895 as a regular
I think I'd look into using H4895.
