I ran this poll over 18 months ago and was curious if thoughts or opinions on the big magnum had changed during that time.
What do you think of Smith and Wessons new 500 S&W Magnum?
I can hardly wait to get one
A solution without a problem
500 S&W what?
Other
Don't forget to go vote

I wasn't a member of this forum 18 months ago so I didn't vote in the poll. Today I would probably vote for: A solution without a problem. At least not any problem I have. If it needs to be done with a handgun, and my Blackhawk 44mag won't do, I'll put a rifle cartridge barrel on my Contender. I don't particularly have any need for a double action revolver that weighs as much as some of my light rifles.

I was really torn between can't wait to get one and a solution without a problem. I had to go with I can't wait to get one. I think I may have Dirty Harry syndrom here, gotta have the biggest fastest thing out there. Other than that I thing the gun and ammo is really overkill for anything I would want to do with a handgun.

I have no idea what my responce was then. Or if I even voted in the poll, however my responce now would be that I'd love to shoot one, but I can't see any honest use for it. A revolver that big defeats the entire purpose of a handgun. That is a gun that is caryable and can be brought to use quickly in time of need.
I guess I'd still vote: A solution without a problem.

An interesting handgun, and I wouldn't mind trying one...but I can't say that I have much hankerin' to own one. Frankly, my .454 is already probably more than I really need, but there IS something about throwing around big chunks of lead at fast speeds........

I have shot the beast, its a handfull .I personaly don't see the need for that much gun unless you plan on hunting large dangerous game and not carry a rifle. I found it to be accurate at 100yds with open sights. Would I buy one? NO
If you get a chance to shoot one

My feelings are the same. I'd buy a used one for $450-525.
Wouldn't go any higher for a novelty gun.

I wasn't around then either, but as I have looked at one in a display case a few times, never touched it for fear my cc might attack the desk..........
They are big, ugly, uneeded, ugly, and heavy. Butttt, I can get one for $835. I have heard x frame triggers and actions are the smotthest to be had, and I have seen that the guns will shoot at 200 yards plus with great precision...............
So I imagine as the newness wears a bit and the price drops to about $775 or so, I will probably have one. Maybe pick up one of the ones that someone buys and can't handle because of recoil. I would guess used they might bring $650 or so. I would have to load specials though the thought of a 400 grain slug at anywhere over 1000 fps makes my wrists ache. But imagine what those things would do to big heavy steel. That would be a nice DONG!!!! I think.

I would love a hunter model but I am not going to pay the current price. Same thing with the desert eagle 50AE they are both novelty guns in my book. Expensive guns and expensive to shoot. I figure some new movie will come out and the demand will go up(remember The Last Boyscout? with the FA 454 blowing up a mustang with one shot. Thats Hollywood for you). I would be more intrested in a 500 S&W lever action rifle when someone makes one(Marlin please make this).

Someone is making one Jay. Wild West Guns in Alaska is making a 500 S&W lever action. I haven't seen any reviews of it and have no idea what the quality is. It should be a real thumper out of a rifle.

If you can't kill something with a .44 Magnum, .45 Colt +P, .454 Casull then you need a rifle or at the very least a carbine in the pistol caliber.
I am convinced that .500 Magnums, .50AE Desert Eagles, and those ridiculous 45-70 revolvers are for guys with weird sexual hangups.

I have absolutely no need for one, or do I have any desire to ever own that beast. They are expensive to buy, and just as expensive to shoot. Even if you reloaded for it, you'd have to buy your powder in 55 gallon drums just to keep up....
I imagine there is a place and use for such a gun, but it ain't in New Jersey.....
The only big, heavy hand cannon I'd be interested in owning is a replica Colt Walker Dragoon, beyond that, the .45 Colt is enough lead for me.....

I wasn't a member the first time this pole waent out. I voted other. I don't have a particular need for one of these monsters, but I have to admit that my curiosity has been aroused. I really want to shoot one of them just to see how it hadles. I am not a big handgun hunter, mainly because I'm not that great of a shot with a pistol. Don't get me wrong, if you were a bad guy, and were within twenty yards of me, you really wouldn't want me shooting at you. However, I lack the long range accuracy that I would need for hunting. As for personal protection, I think my 357 or 44 mag are sufficient. So, as I stated, I really don't have a need for one, but I do want to shoot one. Maybe then I'll want one weather I need it or not.

Solution without a problem? Maybe. Expensive? Maybe. But, how many people own 10 different .45s? Or 10 different lever actions? 7 or 8 12 Gauge shotguns? Hopefully no one is asking them to justify their purchases. ;) Except perhaps to a significant other and we all have to face that demon.
I think new calibers help fuel the market. They increase interest in gun ownership. And more importantly, they get people talking about guns.
I shoot mine about once a week. Doesn't cost me nearly as much to do that than it does to put hundreds and thousands of rounds through my .45s.
Then there are collectors. New gun on the market? Gotta have one.
I like the variety out there. Personally, I'd like to own one of each. :)

I didn't say anyone had to justify one, if you want one go for it. I don't think there's a need for a gun lke that, but there doesn't have to be either, just a want for it.
One of each would be nice but I haven't been able to get my wife to go along with that unless I can get the website to pay for it.

I feel the same way. Thing is, seems like no matter what caliber manufacturers decide to make, there's enough demand to at least break even. Lots of odd calibers being made now.
I can't get my fiance to agree to the one of eahc thing either. Unless I buy her one of each. I'd need to marry a catsup heiress to be able to afford to do something like that. :)

Just wanted to add, that I don't think there's a "need" for a handgun in that caliber. It's definitely desire driven. But those anti-gun yahoos use that "need" word indiscriminately. According to a lot of them, there's no "need" for anything but a shotgun and shotguns are suspect.
So, if I "needed" a reason, pi$$ing off an anti-gun activist would be enough.

I've handled the gun and thought, well, that's nice but, DARN, IT ISBIG. I'm not interested in handguns that big except as sort of an intellectual exercise. IOW, I like powerful handguns, but no bigger than the N frame S&W. E.g. Redhawk, ok, SuperRedhawk, too big.
