lovesrugers started a thread on great handgun cartridges to get a list of contenders for a new poll. So the question is: What do you think the greatest handgun cartridge is?
In no particular order:
9mm
38 Special
357 mag
44 Special
44 Magnum
45 ACP
45 Colt
454 Casull
See the current results
Don't forget to go vote

It wasn't forgotten, I don't recall anyone nominating it in the other thread though, but there is only room for 8 possible answers to the poll. To many good cartridges, to few spaces for answers.

I don't supposed you have to be told how I voted either.
In my part of the world, the .357 Mag is capable of doing the job on anything encountered. I'm firmly convinced to the degree that I sent the money for a new to me 6" Dan Wesson Model 715 today.

Not being a resident of Seattle or Chicago I couldn't vote the way I wanted to so I didn't.
My picks are the 44 special and 45 colt.

Hi there again: I guess it comes down to what you shoot the most I would bet people who own all 8 on the list shoot the 357 more than 44mag and more than the 454. Yes there is a 41 mag why just because I guess I over heard a sales man try-ing to sell a new shooter on a 41 mag. Just because the store had no 45 colt. or short 6" barrel 44 mag.(cheaper to shoot? more control) RIGHT!!! By

These questions really never have a wrong answer because the best cartridges is the one that works best for you. Now the most popular cartridge is another question and of course the 9,10,41,357 44,45,22,all have been popular for along time. in the future others will be added to that list but if I was to pick the absolute best I would have to go with the 22 because it's just fun to shoot for the young and the older codgers like myself.

Well I went ahead and voted for the .357 mag. It may not be as fast or as powerfull as some of the others on the list but it gets the job done. It is fairly inexpensive to shoot, easy to shoot with some practice, and it can be used as a hunting gun if needed. As far as choosing it because I shoot it more than any other that I own, that is not true. I shoot far more 44 mag and .45 Colt. I did have a hard time choosing between the three of them for greatest handgun cartridge. Oh yes I do own all 8 on the list.

I'm not surprised by the results. I was never a big fan of the .357 till one day when I realized I'd owned one for 30 years.

I like to shoot .357's (and .38's) for fun, but as I've noted before, I'm no fan of them for game.
I voted .44 mag. .44 Special and .45 Colt are great too.

Since the 45 ACP got my father through the Pacific theater in WW2 { Thompson, Smith 1917, and 1911A1 ), it gets my vote.

JohnK- I don't feel too bad that the .41 didn't make the list; I don't think it would have gotten many votes anyhow. Despite this I think it is the equal of the other calibers!

I voted for the 45 auto because when you want to stop something what beats it. Think I am wrong, well why do our special ops teams now carry the 45 auto again and not a 9mm simple stopping power. I have heard and read that the military is rethinking dropping the 45 and has begun issuing it again to troops.
Next would be the 44 special I just love mine and it has done the job every time I have used it. But then there is the fun to shoot 38 special and 38 super and then my 44 ruger black powder that shoots .457 bullets and can come close to the magmums in power but you only get 6 chances and then it takes awhile before you can shoot again. Too many choices but what a great problem to have

For law enforcement, probably the .357 mag. For the rest of the world, my vote went to the 45 ACP in a 1911, or 1911 clone!

Lots of great choices, but I'll take the 9mm hands down..
9mm is what got me into reloading! I currently only load 7 different cartridges, but it isn't that I lack "diversity"... It's that I've chosen to "consolidate" on calibers - meaning that I load popular rounds.
In 10 years, I doubt that anyone will even recall the .45 GAP Am I wrong?

Slick I was wondering the same thing on some of these new cartridges. I think I shall start a new thread on which new cartridges do you think will be around in 10 years or more.

I love my 480 SRH Ruger but I get the feeling I'm the only one , so if I had to take a guess it would be one of my choices for disapering.
